Dockside Chatter

What is a telltale? Look at a sail up close and you may spot short strands of red and green yarn fluttering near the front edge. Those are telltales. When both stream straight back, the sail is trimmed just right. When one droops or spins, the sailor knows to adjust. A small thing that tells you a lot: we liked that, so we named this paper after them.

Haul-out season: Across the harbour, boats are coming out of the water for the winter. Cradles are going up, masts are coming down, and shrink wrap is going on. Seasoned hands say the secret to a stress-free spring is a good list made in the fall: note every squeak, drip, and wobble now, while you still remember it.

The lake that never sleeps: Lake Ontario rarely freezes over completely. It is the deepest of the Great Lakes for its size, and all that water holds the summer's warmth well into winter. That's why lake-effect snow can bury towns along the shore while the water itself stays open.

Club & Harbour News

Fall & Winter Fishing Boundaries: The Town of Oakville transitioned to its late-fall/winter fishing schedule on October 15. Open-air public fishing is permitted along Sixteen Mile Creek (upstream of docks), Bronte Creek (north of Rebecca St.), and the Bronte west pier through May 15. Fishing directly inside marina harbours remains prohibited.

MS Chi-Cheemaun Ferry: The Chi-Cheemaun, whose name means "big canoe" in Ojibwe, carries cars and passengers across Georgian Bay between Tobermory and South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island from spring to fall. This winter she's our neighbour: she arrived at Ontario Shipyards in Hamilton in late October for her five-year Transport Canada inspection and maintenance, and will spend the season in dry dock getting ready for next year's sailings.

Hamilton Harbour

Did You Know?

Steer board: Starboard comes from the Old English for "steer board": early ships were steered with an oar on the right-hand side.

Mayday: The distress call comes from the French m'aider, "help me".

Red sky at night: There's some truth to the old rhyme: weather here usually moves west to east, so a clear western sky at sunset often means fair weather on the way.

Bilge Humour

Sorry for what I said when I was docking the boat.

What did the lake say to the sailboat? Nothing. It just waved.

My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it. (Koos Brandt)

Safe Boating Tip

Cold water season: Dress for the water temperature, not the air. In November the lake can be cold enough to make swimming impossible within minutes, so wear your life jacket, not just carry it, and tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back.

Barnaby's Boating Blunders

The Compass Confusion: The captain placed Barnaby at the helm for a brief afternoon watch, instructing him to keep the vessel pointing "dead straight on North." Eager to prove his reliability, Barnaby stared unblinkingly at the polished brass binnacle compass. Unfortunately, he had left his heavy, iron pocketknife in his front coat pocket, right next to the glass casing. As the boat slowly made a complete, involuntary 360-degree circle in the water, the compass needle remained glued firmly toward his pocket. By the time the captain came back on deck, the ship was heading directly toward a rocky marsh, while Barnaby proudly reported that they hadn't wavered a single inch from their course.

Words to Sail By

“The right of way goes to the vessel with the least competent crew.”

— Mike Baiocchi

“Only two sailors, in my experience, never ran aground. One never left port and the other was an atrocious liar.”

— Don Bamford

“Do not tell fish stories where the people know you. Particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.”

— Mark Twain

Knot of the Month

How to tie The Bowline

The Bowline

The classic fixed loop: quick to tie, it won't slip or jam, and it unties easily after a load.

Make a small loop, with the part toward the end crossing on top of the standing part. Lead the end down and back up to make the eye, as big as you need. Bring the end up through the small loop from underneath. Take it around behind the standing part. Bring it back down through the small loop, beside its own rising part. Hold the end against the eye and pull the standing part to tighten.

From the Galley

One-Pot Maritime Chili

In a single deep pot, brown ground beef or turkey with diced onions and chopped garlic. Stir in a can of diced tomatoes, a can of black beans, a small can of tomato paste, and your favourite chili powder blend. Let it simmer on your single galley burner for 15 min.
Aboard: Hearty and deeply comforting after a cold watch. Serve it straight out of deep insulated mugs with spoons to help prevent messes when the boat rolls over unexpected cross-seas.
