The Telltale
A free monthly paper for boaters, sailors, and the waterfront. Light reading for the cockpit, the clubhouse, or the coffee table: local news and events, a quiz, a recipe, a knot to learn, old weather lore, and a few groaners.
What is a telltale?
Short strands of red and green yarn on a sail. When they stream straight back, the sail is trimmed just right; when one droops, the sailor knows to adjust. A small thing that tells you a lot, which is what we hope this paper is too.
Inside every issue
Dockside Chatter, Club & Harbour News, On the Horizon (events), the Navigator's Quiz, Did You Know?, Bilge Humour, the Salty Dictionary, Old Salt's Weather Lore, a Safe Boating Tip, the Photo of the Month, a word search, From the Galley, the Knot of the Month, and the Boater's Almanac of sunrises, sunsets, and moon phases.
Editions
Each edition is put together by a local editor for its own stretch of shore.
Spot the Burgee
Every month our little burgee, a navy pennant with a red and green stripe, hides in one of the ads in the printed paper. Find it, tell us which ad it's in by the closing date, and you're in the draw for that month's prize from a local business.
One entry per person per month. Enter from your edition's page, or scan the code in the contest box.
Advertise
Ads run down both sides of the front and back pages, where every reader sees them, and every ad also appears in the online issue with a link to your website. Boxes come in one, two, or three spaces, in colour, with a QR code if you like.
Each edition sells its own ads. Get in touch through your edition's page at thetelltale.ca, and its editor will get back to you.
Pick up a copy
The Telltale comes out at the start of each month and is left at marinas, yacht clubs, chandleries, cafés, and other waterfront spots. Each edition's page lists its pick-up spots, and every issue is online too, with a free email when the new one is out.
