Dockside Chatter

What is a telltale? Look at a sail up close and you may spot short strands of red and green yarn fluttering near the front edge. Those are telltales. When both stream straight back, the sail is trimmed just right. When one droops or spins, the sailor knows to adjust. A small thing that tells you a lot: we liked that, so we named this paper after them.

Haul-out season: Across the harbour, boats are coming out of the water for the winter. Cradles are going up, masts are coming down, and shrink wrap is going on. Seasoned hands say the secret to a stress-free spring is a good list made in the fall: note every squeak, drip, and wobble now, while you still remember it.

The lake that never sleeps: Lake Ontario rarely freezes over completely. It is the deepest of the Great Lakes for its size, and all that water holds the summer's warmth well into winter. That's why lake-effect snow can bury towns along the shore while the water itself stays open.

Club & Harbour News

Winter speaker series: Clubs around the harbour are lining up their winter talks: cruising the North Channel, racing rules made simple, and an evening on boat electrics. Watch On the Horizon for dates.

Your news here: Club news, regatta results, a new member to welcome? Send it in and we'll share it with the whole waterfront.

Knot of the Month

The bowline

How to tie the The bowline

The king of knots: a fixed loop that won't slip or jam, yet unties easily.

Make a small loop in the line. Bring the end up through the loop (the rabbit comes out of its hole), around behind the standing part (round the tree), and back down through the loop (back down the hole). Hold the loop and pull the standing part to tighten.

Did You Know?

Steer board: Starboard comes from the Old English for "steer board": early ships were steered with an oar on the right-hand side.

Mayday: The distress call comes from the French m'aidez, "help me".

Scuttlebutt: A ship's water cask was the scuttlebutt, and the gossip swapped around it took the same name.

Red sky at night: There's some truth to the old rhyme: weather here usually moves west to east, so a clear western sky at sunset often means fair weather on the way.

Bilge Humour

Sorry for what I said when I was docking the boat.

What did the lake say to the sailboat? Nothing. It just waved.

My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it. (Koos Brandt)

Old Salt's Weather Lore

“Mackerel skies and mares' tails make tall ships carry low sails.”

“When the glass falls low, prepare for a blow; when the glass is high, let your kites fly.”

“If the goose honks high, fair weather. If the goose honks low, foul weather.”

Safe Boating Tip

Cold water season: Dress for the water temperature, not the air. In November the lake can be cold enough to make swimming impossible within minutes, so wear your lifejacket, not just carry it, and tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back.

From the Galley

One-pot galley chili · serves 4

1 lb ground beef or turkey
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic
1 can kidney beans
1 can diced tomatoes
2 tbsp chili powder
1 tsp cumin
Salt and pepper

Brown the meat with the onion and garlic. Stir in everything else, bring to a simmer, and cook 20 minutes, stirring now and then. Better the next day, and it keeps a crew warm through haul-out.
