Spot the Burgee: the rules
Spot the Burgee is The Telltale's free monthly contest. These rules apply in every edition.
Who runs it
The Telltale, run by rec-safe, with each edition's local publisher, who supplies that edition's prize.
Who can enter
- Anyone 13 or older who lives in Canada or the United States. If you're under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to your entry and accept the prize for you.
- Not the edition's publisher or editors, the business giving that month's prize, or anyone who lives with them.
How to enter
- Find our little burgee, a navy pennant with a red and green stripe, hidden in one of the ads in that month's issue, in the printed paper or its print version online.
- Tell us which ad on your edition's contest page by the closing date shown there.
- One entry per person, and per email address, each month.
No purchase needed. The Telltale is free, in print and online.
The draw
- After the contest closes, The Telltale's system draws one winner at random from all the correct entries. The odds depend on how many correct entries there are.
- Someone who has won Spot the Burgee in the past 12 months, in any edition, can't win again until 12 months have passed.
- In Canada, the person drawn must correctly answer a mathematical skill-testing question, without help, to win. It comes in the email telling them they were drawn.
- If the person drawn doesn't reply within 14 days (and, in Canada, answer the question correctly), another correct entry may be drawn.
The prize
- Each month's prize is described on the contest page and in the paper, and is given by the business named. It's usually worth about $20.
- There's no cash instead, and the prize can't be swapped or passed on unless the business agrees.
- The business giving the prize is responsible for it.
Winners' names
We show a winner's first name and last initial on the contest page only if they ticked the box saying we may when they entered. Otherwise we congratulate "our winner".
Your information
Names and email addresses are used only to run the draw and contact the winner. They're never shown, shared, or sold. We email you about new issues only if you ask us to, and every email has a way to stop.
The fine print
- Entries that are late, incomplete, sent by a computer program, or more than one per person don't count.
- If something goes wrong with a month's contest, such as a misprint, we may cancel or change it and say so on the contest page.
- Void where prohibited. The contest follows the laws where each edition is published.
